With a few anglers away and others deciding the strong winds were two much, only ten anglers turned up at Cranstal to fish the latest measure and return comp. With the side on winds and bright sunshine and fished over high, there was little optimism that much or indeed any fish would be caught, but this proved unfounded. Mike Emery took three dogfish in the first ninety minutes and then proceeded to watch others whittle away his early lead, with a few dogfish and mackeral being caught. Barry “the bass” Sharpe took his namesake on his first cast but had conceed that title when Mark Quirk, fed up with blanking, plopped two crab baits in close and within minutes landed a double shot that totalled seven pounds. Just to prove his luck the very next cast saw him land a double shot of rockling! . Quietly going along taking the odd dogfish was Orry Turner who ended up with five for the win on the day, the heaviest of his taking the dogfish pool. The second to fifth places were separated by only eleven centimetres, Colin Quayle heading Sharpe, Quirk and Emery with a mixed bag that also included a long range bass. Quirk’s heaviest bass weighed 3lb 10ozs for the other pool and he drew Turner in the pairs.
Result 1, O. Turner 400cms; 2, C. Quayle 314; 3, B. Sharpe 310; 4, M. Quirk 304; 5, M. Emery 303; 6, I. Ashcroft 82; 7, T. Moffat 40.
With poor results of the ramsey beaches lately, Summer Shield 5 saw all seventeen anglers head for the piers but although the majority caught the quantities weren’t great. Mark Quirk continued his recent good form on the north pier with coalies, whiting, and a tub gurnard in his winning catch. In fact several tubs were landed, the heaviest of 1lb 10ozs falling to John Senogles on his first cast. Only one dogfish was caught on the north, most of them coming of the south, the heaviest of which by Don Jenner. Best fight on the night was with Ben Richards and a seagull, but it was Ian Ashcroft who came off second best, as everyone can vouch for after been shown his “fatal” wound!!!!.
Result 1, M. Quirk 258cms; 2, J. Francere 190; 3, J. Senogles 144; 4, A. Dugdale 141; 5, M. Emery 141; 6, I. Ashcroft 135; 7, D. Jenner 113; 8, B. Richards 99; 9, C. Quayle 95; 10, B. Harrison 93; 11, C. Culshaw 58; 12, K. Quinn 37.
Next comp is round two of the Rock Species, fishing Ballafayle from 2.00-7.00pm this sunday.
