With a few anglers away and others deciding the strong winds were two much, only ten anglers turned up at Cranstal to fish the latest measure and return comp. With the side on winds and bright sunshine and fished over high, there was little optimism that much or indeed any fish would be caught, but this proved unfounded. Mike Emery took three dogfish in the first ninety minutes and then proceeded to watch others whittle away his early lead, with a few dogfish and mackeral being caught. Barry “the bass” Sharpe took his namesake on his first cast but had conceed that title when Mark Quirk, fed up with blanking, plopped two crab baits in close and within minutes landed a double shot that totalled seven pounds. Just to prove his luck the very next cast saw him land a double shot of rockling! . Quietly going along taking the odd dogfish was Orry Turner who ended up with five for  the win on the day, the heaviest of his taking the dogfish pool. The second to fifth places were separated by only eleven centimetres, Colin Quayle heading Sharpe, Quirk and Emery with a mixed bag that also included a long range bass. Quirk’s heaviest bass weighed 3lb 10ozs for the other pool and he drew Turner in the pairs.

Result 1, O. Turner 400cms; 2, C. Quayle 314; 3, B. Sharpe 310; 4, M. Quirk 304; 5, M. Emery 303; 6, I. Ashcroft 82; 7, T. Moffat 40.

With poor results of the ramsey beaches lately, Summer Shield 5 saw all seventeen anglers head for the piers but although the majority caught the quantities weren’t great. Mark Quirk continued his recent good form on the north pier with coalies, whiting, and a tub gurnard in his winning catch. In fact several tubs were landed, the heaviest of 1lb 10ozs falling to John Senogles on his first cast. Only one dogfish was caught on the north, most of them coming of the south, the heaviest of which by Don Jenner. Best fight on the night was with Ben Richards and a seagull, but it was Ian Ashcroft who came off second best, as everyone can vouch for after been shown his “fatal” wound!!!!.

Result 1, M. Quirk 258cms; 2, J. Francere 190; 3, J. Senogles 144; 4, A. Dugdale 141; 5, M. Emery 141; 6, I. Ashcroft 135; 7, D. Jenner 113; 8, B. Richards 99; 9, C. Quayle 95; 10, B. Harrison 93; 11, C. Culshaw 58; 12, K. Quinn 37.

Next comp is round two of the Rock Species, fishing Ballafayle from 2.00-7.00pm this sunday.

Results Round-Up

Although conditions were ideal for tope, none showed in the second round of the Courier Cup held at Point West. As usual dogfish provided the bulk of the catch, but surprisingly only a few mackeral were landed. Following on from his win in the TSB the previous week, Barry Sharpe landed eleven dogfish in his catch for a clear win ahead of in-form Andy Dugdale who was only three cms clear of the big casting Ian Ashcroft. Also fishing well lately is Gareth Binns, who has been in the top five in the last three comps, to take fourth spot ahead of Mark Quirk. Ben Richards has been having a lean time of late, after a very sucessful run last summer, landed the heaviest doggie of 2lb 3ozs with Colin Duke taking the other pool with a 1lb 3oz coalie. Dugdale and Don Jenner combined to take the mystery pairs.

After two rounds, Ian Ashcroft leads the way ahead of Gareth Binns and Mark Quirk, closely followed by Orry Turner.

Result 1, B. Sharpe 938cms; 2, A. Dugdale 833; 3, I. Ashcroft 831; 4, G. Binns 720; 5, M. Quirk 672; 6, D. Jenner 640; 7, J. Senogles and O. Turner 560; 9, C. Quayle 520; 10, T. Moffat 437; 11, B. Richards 400;12, J. Francere 390; 13, K. Quinn 320; 14, G. Dugdale 281; 15, C. Culshaw 240; 16, C. Duke 165; 17, P. Graham 160.

Next comp is a bag weight at Cranstal this sunday, the 4th, fishing 3.00-7.00pm.

Courier Cup & TSB Trophy

The opening round of the Courier Cup, held at Point West, had hoped to show that summer had arrived with a few tope being caught, but alas the cold winter seems to delayed their arrival. Plucking peg one wouldn’t have been everyones best choice for this venue but unusally this didn’t prevent Ian Ashcroft from picking up the majority of the cash with a win, a pool and a share in the pairs. Ashcroft and second placed Ben Richards both took fourteen dogfish, but it was the former who landed the only roundfish on the night, a pool winning gurnard, to win. Third placed Orry Turner, who fished between Ashcroft and Richards took one doggie less but shared the pairs with the winner, and a share of the dogfish pool with fourth placed Mark Quirk. Next round will be this sunday on Point West, fishing 4.30-8.30pm

Result 1, I. Ashcroft 1148cms; 2, B. Richards 1120; 3, O. Turner 1040; 4, M. Quirk 880; 5, G. Binns 880; 6, T. Moffat 800; 7, A. Dugdale 720; 8, B. Sharpe 640; 9, C. Duke 480; 10, G. Dugdale 480; 11, K. Quinn 400; 12, C. Quayle 320; 13, C. Grose (L) 240; 14, J. Francere 240; 15, C. Quayle (jnr) 160.

Manx Match saw another close comp at the start of the T.S.B. Trophy, with again a couple of round fish being the differance over first and second. Again fourteen dogfish were landed by the leading pair , Barry Sharpe and Gareth Binns, but Sharpe took a catch card codling and a coalie to deny peg one from

a repeat win. Colin Duke appeared to be in with a shout after landing several doubles but fell one short and ended up third. Again this venue proved fairer than previous years with Sharpe and Duke doing well from the middle pegs. With this trophy held over three legs and a combined length everyone is still in with a shout.

Pools on the night went to Mark Quirk’s 2lb 7oz dogfish and Colin Quayle’s 14oz coalie, while Chris Quayle teamed up with Sharpe to take the pairs. Next round is on sunday at Stone Boat on the 27th fishing 5.00-9.00pm.

Result 1, B. Sharpe 1184cms; 2, G. Binns 1120; 3, C. Duke 1040; 4, A. Dugdale 863; 5, O. Turner 800; 6, M. Quirk 640; 7, J. Senogles 640; 8, I. Ashcroft 560; 9, P. Graham 560; 10, C. Quayle 498; 11, K. Quinn 400; 12, T. Moffat 400; 13, J. Francere 400; 14, G. Dugdale 240; 15, C. Quayle (jnr) 240; 16, C. Culshaw 80.

After the disappointing results in Ramsey Angling club’s 3 day festival, it was good to see improved catches in the latest comps held. Round 2 of the summer shield saw a narrow win for George Dugdale over Mark Quirk who fished the south and north piers respectively. George took four dogfish and three whiting while Mark had coalies as the majority in his bag. Colin Quayle fishing alongside George took third , along with a pool winning doggie, again only just ahead of the norths Kevin Quinn and Paul Graham. Only five of the fifteen anglers ventured onto the beach, moving from a weed filled Ballure to the cleaner Vollan, but only Ian Ashcroft and John Senogles finding fish.

The other pool went to a flounder of just over the pound taken by Johnny Green.

Result 1, G. Dugdale 411; 2, M. Quirk 404; 3, C. Quayle 336; 4, K. Quinn 333; 5, P. Graham 306;

6, M. Emery 194; 7, I. Ashcroft 190; 8, C. Culshaw 158; 9, J. Senogles and M. Longworth 80; 11, J. Green 79;

12, D. Smith 66.

The previous comp held at Manx Match produced an even comp and this latest one again showed the venue has lost its “peggy” name. The majority of anglers had at least half a dozen doggies in their totals and a few coalies to spice things up. Proving thirteen isn’t an unlucky number, Terry Moffat landed thirteen dogfish and two coalies from peg thirteen for the win ahead of Colin Quayle who also had thirteen dogfish. Summer angler Gareth Binns took a deserved third with eleven doggies. Following in his dad’s footsteps, Andy Dugdale took a bullhuss of a fraction over seven pounds for the first pool, with Colin Duke landing the heaviest dog for the second pool.

Result 1, T. Moffat 1107; 2, C. Quayle 1040; 3, G. Binns 911; 4, I. Ashcroft, C. Duke, and B. Sharpe 800;

7, M. quirk 720; 8, A. Dugdale 697; 9, M. Emery 670; 10, G. Dugdale 640; 11, K. Quinn and J. Senogles 560;

13, P. Graham 480; 14, J. Francere 400; 15, B. Harrison 240; 16, C. Quayle (jnr) 80.

Next comp is sunday the 6th of june at Point West, fishing 4.30-8.30pm.

Ramsey Angling Festival

imag0074-01As in last years successful 25th running of Ramsey Angling club’s 3 day Festival, 88 anglers tried their best to pick up the £1,000 first prize on offer in this years Tourist Board sponsored event. Visiting anglers again outnumbered their local rivals, with the latter out to stop a recent run of english victories. On the first day, at Manx Match, competitors were met with a strong southerly wind creating difficult conditions, but from the start there was fish to be caught. As expected the bigger weights came from the top zones, with Pete Corker from Bagillt taking the heaviest in zone 1 which was one of ten other weights over the twenty pound mark.

Other zone winners on the day were Steve Quilliam, Folkestone’s Martyn Reid and Orry Turner. George Dugdale took the heaviest fish of the week when he landed near nine pound bull huss from the end peg in the top zone.

Day 1 Zone 1, 1, P. Corker 31-09; 2, B. Richards 31-08; 3, D. Little 30-06.

Zone 2 1, S. Quilliam 27-08; 2, C. Buy 25-06; 3, T. Moffat 17-09.

Zone 3 1, M. Reid 19-11; 2, C. Quayle 18-09; 3, M. Pinder 13-11.

Zone 4 1, O. Turner 17-01; 2, D. Read 9-14; 3, S. Littlewood 8-13.

Day two venue was at Dogmills and over low water, expectations were high with light offshore winds making conditions near perfect. After two hours it was obvious the fish were not there in the numbers expected and this proved so at the end when half the field failed to catch. Only two anglers reached double figures, Nev Charlesworth from Withernsea and Peel’s Garry Reid, finishing one and two in zone one. Colchester’s Craig Buy, a recent convert to this comp, took zone two with only three dogfish as did his travelling partner, Rob Tuck in zone three.Last years champion, Richard Burt, helped his defence by taking zone four. Tuck made it a very profitable night by collecting both pools in zones three and four.

Result  Day 2 Zone 1  1, N. Charlesworth 15-10; 2, G. Reid 11-01; 3, S. Page 8-11.

Zone 2 1, C. Buy 4-10; 2, M. Corlett 4-05; 3, D. Hutchinson 4-04.

Zone 3 1, R. Tuck 6-05; 2, G. Hutson 3-03; 3, S. Drayton 1-14.

Zone 4  1, R. Burt 7-03; 2, D. Jenner 6-14; 3, N. Elliott 4-14.

After two days Craig Buy had a three point lead over Marc Corlett who led Ben Richards, Nathan Elliott, Rob Tuck, Stuie Littlewood and Saul Page by a single point. On to the final day at the Vollan and again the conditions were ideal or so we thought. With last nights horror results the start was put back an hour in the hope of more fish with the added half hour of darkness, but nobody told the fish as again half the field blanked. Heaviest weight on the night fell to Andrew Dugdale in zone 2 but even he didn’t reach double figures.

Zone 1 was taken by Pete Corker for his second zone win, as did Steve Quilliam in zone three, but it was in zone four that would prove decisive. Four of the main contenders were pegged together, Littlewood, Burt, Buy and Page but the dreaded blanks hit the first three, and Page took three dogfish for the zone win.

After the results were compiled, Saul Page from Deal had collected a fourth, third and a zone win to collect the title by a single point from Corker, while Dugdale sneaked up to claim a impressive third, and Charlesworth took fourth.

Result Day 3  Zone 1 1, P. Corker 5-10; 2, B. Sharpe 4-12; 3, T. Moffat 3-13.

Zone 2 1, A. Dugdale 9-10; 2, M. Hall 7-02; 3, O.Turner 4-10.

Zone 3 1, S. Quilliam 7-01; 2, N. Charlesworth 5-09; 3, S. Durrant 3-11.

Zone 4 1, S. Page 4-08; 2, K. Bragg 3-06; 3, S. Golightly 2-13.

Hailing from Deal, Saul has now made it a hat-trick of wins for anglers visiting from the south-east of england, an area not noted for its dogfish fishing so next year the manx anglers will have a point to prove! .

Apart from the Tourist Board’s generous sponsorship, other people need to be thanked to help this event, these are: Ramsey Town Commissioners, the Steam Packet, Colin Duke of Allround Tackle, Ramsey Rugby club,

Jim and Gill of the Trafalgar Inn, Mike Hall of IPS, Mrs Royle for the use of the field at Dogmills and also the committee’s wives for the excellant buffet at the presentation.
