Venue: Point West

Conditions: Sunny, 10-15 mph North Westerly winds

Tide: HW 7.00pm, 7.4mt

The three legs of the Ramsey Angling club’s Courier Cup are always held on Point West and thirteen anglers were met with ideal conditions for round 1. From the start dogfish showed along the venue, although it was the higher peg numbers that fared better. Marc Corlett and Don Jenner on the top two pegs had a close match throughout, with Marc edging the win with a not so unlucky thirteen dogfish, but Don took the heaviest fish pool with a rare spotted ray, weighing in at 2lb 10ozs. Sticking with the fixed spool rod of late, Mark Quirk took third place despite missing lots of bites. Fishing alongside the top three, Colin Skilicorn was fourth, with Ian Ashcroft winning a weigh off to decide fifth ahead of Colin Quayle. The other pool went to Andrew Dugdale, and the pairs pool went to Marc and Colin Q.

Result 1, M. Corlett 1040cms; 2, D. Jenner 948; 3, M. Quirk 720; 4, C. Skillicorn 640; 5, I. Ashcroft 560; 6, C. Quayle 560; 7, B. Harrison 551; 8, A. Dugdale 430; 9, K. Quinn 400; 10, J. Senogles 320; 11, C. Culshaw 240; =12, G. Dugdale and K. Clough 160.

Next up is a rollover with the Summer Shield 2 comp on Wednesday 22nd fishing 7pm-10pm followed by the third and final leg of the T.S.B. Trophy at Stone Boat on Sunday, the 26th of May, fishing 4.30-8.30pm.

As a further note the club are running a open casting event on June 8th at Jurby airfield. This isn’t a serious “comp” but for those curious to see how far they can chuck a lead, for more details contact Andy Dugdale on 490312.

Venue: Stone Boat

Conditions: Showers, 10-15 mph South Westerly winds

Tide: LW 7:58pm, 1.6mt

Round 2 of Ramsey Angling club’s T.S.B. trophy held at Stone boat saw the same ten anglers from the previous round hoping to catch ground on leader Andy Dugdale. With Andy drawing a peg from the unfancied lower numbers the chase was on, but five dogfish in three casts soon ended that initial belief. The higher numbered pegs had dogfish on their first cast, with Mark Quirk, George Dugdale and Don Jenner landing early fish, but that was all until the tide turned and a few more showed. With Andy having a mid session disaster with lost fish and stripping the gears on a reel, Don, Mark and George soon caught up, but as at the tide turned again Andy landed a couple of late fish to win again. Don ended on five along with Colin Quayle, but the former had the heavier dogfish, Mark and George finished with four each. Apart from the win, Andy had the heaviest dogfish on the night and collected the pairs pool with Colin. With no other sizeable fish landed, Ian took the other pool with the second heaviest doggie. One unlucky angler drew his second blank from the same peg number, on not so lucky peg seven. Result 1, A. Dugdale 560cms; 2, D. Jenner 400; 3, C. Quayle 400; =4, G. Dugdale and M. Quirk; =6, I. Ashcroft and J. Senogles 160; 8, K. Quinn 80.

Next comp is on the most popular venue, Point West,on Sunday the 19th with the start of the Courier Cup, fishing will be 5.00-9.00pm. The following Wednesday the second round of the Summer Shield will be held, fishing 7.00-10.00pm, hopefully fish will be caught after the first round saw a blank.

Date: Saturday 11th May 5.30pm-9.30pm

Venue: South Prom

Conditions: Showers, 25 mph South Westerly winds

Tide: LW 7.30pm, 1.4mt

The third of the Saturday night matchman opens was held in blustery and damp conditions on Ramsey’s south prom. A decent turnout of nine anglers had a little concern as with an hour to the start the tide still had a little way to go, but it soon dropped and we all got underway. Repeating his success of last week David Walls landed a dogfish on his first cast this proved to be the only fish until the bottom of the tide when David landed his second fish of the night followed by Ian Ashcroft keeping up the catch success with his new rod. The unsociable duo of Marc Corlett and Don Jenner found the left hand side of the venue tough going with Marc catching on the turn of the tide but then only adding another one before the end. In the middle pegs the continental style of fishing was proving to be a bit of a challenge with both Mark Quirk and David having a bit of a mid comp disaster, missing fish and having tackle malfunctions. This ultimately proved to be the difference as 3 anglers finished on 4 dogfish apiece but man in form Andy Dugdale was at it again as with his 4 dogfish haul plus a coalfish and whiting were enough for the win. It was down to the scales for second but even this could not split Mark and David each ending up with a share of the spoils. Everybody caught fish on the night with Colin Skillicorn finding 3 dogfish for third and the trio of Ian, Marc and George Dugdale each catching two, with Marc maybe needing to switch to the continental tactics to find those extra few yards to make the difference. It was left to Bill Harrison and Don to bring up the rear each on one.

Result

1st Andy Dugdale - 374

2nd David Walls, Mark Quirk – 320 (both dogfish weighed 1lb 11, 7/8 oz)

3rd Colin Skillicorn – 240

4th Ian Ashcroft, Marc Corlett and George Dugdale – 160

5th Bill Harrison, Don Jenner – 80

Next round 25th May @ Ballure fishing 5pm – 9pm, all welcome.

Date: Sunday 5th May 6pm-10pm

Venue: Dogmills

Conditions: Dry, 25 mph Southerly winds

Tide: HW 21:05pm, 8.1mt

After the previous week which showed a slight improvement in the fishing, most of the anglers felt it was going to be a hard nights fishing. As expected it took over two hours for the first fish to show, a dogfish falling to the inform Andy Dugdale. Despite ending the match twenty minutes early, a further dogfish and a whiting was enough for his second win in a week. With long distance casting all the vogue, new kid on the block Ian Ashcroft brought out his new weapon of mass distance to put his end peg to good use and land two doggies for second. Ironically Andy and Ian were both on the two end pegs, the only other weighers on the night were Colin Quayle and Mark Quirk both landing a dogfish apiece. Pools on the night went to Colin and Andy.
Result 1, A. Dugdale 194cms; 2, I. Ashcroft 160; =3, C. Quayle and M. Quirk 80.

Tide: LW 20:30pm, 0.7mt

First round of the T.S.B. trophy held at the Stone boat and one of three combining overall length to decide the winner, proved hard going for the dozen anglers. Distance casting was always going to be the winner with fish being scarce over recent months and it proved so with Andy Dugdale taking eight dogfish to win. Mark Quirk and Colin Quayle both landed four each, with Mark’s small whiting helping him to second and a pool win. Not content with one pool he shared the heaviest dogfish pool with Don Jenner who was placed fifth just behind Colin Skillicorn. All the rest bar one managed to land one doggie to give hope the bad fishing is now behind us.

The final leg of twelve of the Winter Shield saw four possible contenders for the outright win, although Kevin Quinn would need to blank for Paul Graham, John Senogles andMark Quirk to overhaul him. With the fishing dire of late with two total blanks in the previousthree legs, it was good to see a few fish caught and it was Quinn who caught the first fish,a sizeable whiting, to put one hand on the Shield. Once darkness fell it was good to see some dogfish being caught, and although three anglers landed three apiece it was that early whiting which gave Quinnthe extra cms to win on the night, and of course the title of Winter Champion. Catching on the nightended a run of three blanks for some anglers, one of which was joint second placed Don Jenner alongwithColin Quayle , fourth went to Colin Skillicorn, fifth to Andy Dugdale and sixth to Chris Culshaw.Quinn added to his winnings with the heaviest dogfish and a share of the pairs pool. Culshaw and GeorgeDudale collected the roll over pools with a flounder and a whiting. For one angler, who will remainnameless to save his blushes the wait for a fish will enter a fifth match !

Date: Sunday 7th April 6pm-10pm

Venue: Harbour Walls

Conditions: Dry, 17-20mph easterly winds

Tide: HW 22:27pm, 8.7mt

With the majority of anglers entering their 8th hour of competitive angling without a fish Ian Ashcroft came out with a very bold statement at the start that he at least would catch a flounder at some stage a fact he was constantly reminded of in the four fishless hours that followed. A man who could count himself unlucky in recent weeks is Bill Harrison as while most have not even seen so much as a bite Bill has caught fish albeit under-size. This trend continued again as he was the only one to catch with a Rockling being added to the list of a Flounder, Coalie and Sea Scorpion just failing to make the grade. Anglers on the North Pier did have a little excitement as a low fly past by a flock of Canada Geese caught one of the several lines cast out. George Dugdale was the unfortunate fisherman to see his ZZipflex hybrid rod launch from the wall and but for the Gazelle like reactions of Paul Graham who managed to grab the rod butt at the very last minute it would have meant a dip into the Guinness fund for George to replace the lost tackle. So yet again with no sizable fish caught between the 10 anglers we have another rollover of prize money to the next Winter shield on the 21st April fishing 6pm-10pm.

Conditions: Dry, 16-18mph northeasterly winds

Club members were in for another tough competition with the first of the unfortunately titled Summer Shield series. At present the clocks going forward is the only sign of summer and the fishing getting better, as a cold NE wind was still evident keeping temperatures down. Nine anglers turned up to fish and in 3 hours of fishing not a single sizeable fish was caught. Two anglers did manage to catch with Bill Harrison being the unluckiest when he managed to catch two fish, but both the unusual two sided flounder and coalie failed to make the grade. Colin Skillicorn was the second angler who caught and his flounder also failed to make the 25cm size limit. So with nothing else to report, all pool, bag and pairs money will roll over to the next Summer Shield competition

Date: Friday 29th March 4pm-8pm

Venue: Stone Boat

Conditions: Dry, 17-20mph easterly winds

Tide: LW 7:09pm, 0.6mt

Prospects for the clubs annual Easter Open were not good given the general poor state of fishing around the island at the moment. With that in mind and the given weather forecast of 30mph easterly wind, thanks must go to the 10 hardy anglers who turned up to fish. With the easterly winds not as strong as first feared it was hoped that maybe a few fish would turn up. After an unproductive two hours this was definitely not going to be the case as not a single fish had been landed. Bill Harrison then wound in the first fish of the day, but no amount of stretching would allow the tiny Sea Scorpion make the grade. With darkness falling for the last hour there was still hope that some fish would be caught, again the majority of anglers were left disappointed as the only sizable fish landed was a dogfish of 1lb6oz. This allowed Orry Turner to take the £40 first prize and 1st pool, leaving the other placings up for grabs via the luck of a draw. First out of the bag taking the £25 second placed prize was Colin Quayle, the second lucky person taking £15 for third was Ian Ashcroft whilst Kevin Quinn completed the prize list by taking the second pool money. As they say things can only get better and the next club competition is this coming Thursday 4th April fishing 7-10pm.

Result

1st Orry Turner 80 pts £40 + £10 pool
